For a business to continue its operation, they must be able to get themselves both loyal and new customers to support their products. A great way to do this is to increase and develop their marketing strategies to attract them into buying their items. One strategy being used by most companies now is scent branding. They are taking advantage of the fact that the sense of smell is in some way connected to the brain’s limbic system. Because of this, people are able to associate and remember an experience of thing with the aroma they are sensing. Basically, they try to make consumers remember their company using a certain smell that is unique to their company like how many people think of Starbucks when they smell coffee or buying popcorn when they go into the theatre because the popcorn’s aroma is everywhere.
In choosing your scent though, you must select the one which is related to your business. You can’t just go for a smell because you like it. Say you like the smell of sweet potatoes. You can’t use sweet potatoes smell in your store when you’re selling shoes. There are limitations and guidelines you must follow. Like music branding and other branding strategies, it requires a lot of thinking and real concentration to come up with a smell you can use probably for a life time. Also, choose the one that is easy to remember but not really painful to the nose. There are smells that come off too strong and causes headache. Irritating your customers is probably the last thing you want to do.
